Food Review: Chipstar

While i was in the centre of Rome on the weekend collecting my race pack for WeRunRome 10k race i came across a chip place near Piazza del Popolo. It was called Chipstar Amsterdam and was selling chunky chips with a selection of different sauces.

Chipstar is no big restaurant but rather a little Street shop where people can pop in buy their food and eat them on the street or on the go (Street food). And slightly reminds me of a chip shop back in the UK but without the fish and other things.

It seems to be like an Amsterdam chip place with the many different types of sauces and are infact dutch originating. Which is funny as one of my friends from Holland pointed out also a few weeks ago that there was a Dutch chip place opening in Naples!

And since then i have also noticed a few different places like this popping up all over Rome. They are also becoming very popular so could easily become the next big thing if you want something different than Italian food!

Deciding this would be a good lunch i joined the very long queue to pay at the cash machine lady before getting my ticket to collect my chips. There were 4 different sizes of cones the chips came in and i decided on large.

I could see all the chips cooking at the back and stopped to take a photo of the chip making machine with the potatoes all ready to be used.

Staring at the board of sauces i was spoilt for choice and a little torn on what to try for my first experience of these chips but soon decided on tartar sauce and ketchup.

I watched in anticipation while my chips were scooped up into a large paper cone before generous amounts of tartar sauce and ketchup were squirted on top.

Thanking the women i headed outside to find somewhere to sit with all the other people trying this new Street food to Rome.

The chips were perfectly chunky soft in the inside and slightly crunchy on the outside! The tartar sauce wasn’t as tangy as the one i have back in the UK but tasted good with the chips and ketchup combination.

Having chunky chips makes a nice change from having french fries all the time and taste completely different (which is weird in a way as its all potato).

I found i couldn’t eat all of my large cone of chips as it was quite big and i can’t imagine eating the larger size as that must be gigantic and probably better for sharing.

Im quite excited i have found one of these chip places as its nice to know its there if you want something a little different for lunch. I also can’t wait to try some of the other sauces like the curry one and the dutch mayo!

Miss Peanut loves chips and so it would also be a good place to take her to along with Alex who is also a chip man!

It will also be a little adventure seeking out these other dutch chip places to try and see how different they are. There is nothing better than a good chip and the sauces make them a real treat and i can’t wait to try some more! 🙂

Interesting to a foreigner. Do you also put tartar sauce on French fries? In the USA most people use: ketchup, salt & pepper. Sometimes i use a little hot sauce to spice things up a it.

Usually tartar sauce is used for White fish like cod but i find it nice with chips to especially with fish and chips 🙂 Usually on chips its salt and vinegar and ketchup 🙂

We also use it on White fish. We also use it on fried seafood like: clams, oysters, calamari, etc.

I’m delighted I came across your site and was wondering if you or any of your readers can give me some advice about recruitment in Italy. I’m working for a company that is looking to expand into Rome and Milan and was wondering if anyone had any advice on the best places to advertise locally. We are looking for English speaking businessmanagers so any advice would be greatly appreciated. We’ve advertised on Linkedin and Monster.com but haven’t had much luck attracting the right applicants.
